What to Bring on a Guided Fishing Trip

Licenses, gear and layers to pack for a Briggs fishing day or lodge trip on the Rogue, our Hells Canyon fishing trip, or a little fishing on a rafting trip.

What to Bring on a Guided Fishing Trip

Sort out your fishing license first, then pack from the list for your trip below. Bring layers and rain gear, since a lot of the best Rogue fishing happens in the cooler months.

Licenses

  • Rogue River trips with Briggs. An Oregon fishing license with a salmon and steelhead tag. Get it before you come.
  • Idaho trips. An Idaho fishing license, including if you plan to fish on a Lower Salmon rafting trip. You can buy one in Riggins or online.

Rods and tackle

  • Dedicated fishing trips. We provide conventional rods, reels and tackle, so you don't need to bring your own.
  • Fly fishing. We don't supply fly fishing gear. If you want to fly fish, bring your own rod, reel and flies.
  • Rafting trips. Want to cast a line between rapids? Bring your own rod and tackle.

Briggs Rogue River Full-Day Fishing Trip

  • Layers for the weather
  • Waterproof footwear
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • A hat
  • Sunscreen

Briggs Rogue River 4-Day Wild and Scenic Fishing Trip

This trip runs late August through October, so pack for cool mornings and rain. We give you a dry bag for your lodge things and a small bag for the boat. Your gear comes rigged and ready, and every night ends at a lodge with a hot shower and dinner.

In the boat

  • Your Oregon fishing license with a salmon and steelhead tag
  • Rubber boots
  • Full rain gear
  • A warm jacket and long underwear
  • Two pairs of long pants
  • Two long-sleeve shirts
  • A hat
  • Polarized sunglasses and sunscreen
  • The drinks you like. Your guide keeps an ice chest on the boat, and extras ride down on the raft so it gets restocked every day
  • Your own fly rod, reel and flies, if you plan to fly fish

At the lodge

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Shorts or a swimsuit
  • A flashlight
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal hygiene items

Travel

  • The trip ends early in the afternoon on Day 4 with a three-hour van ride back to Merlin, so book your flight home for the next day
  • Medford is the closest airport, about 34 miles from Merlin

Hells Canyon 4-Day Bass and Sturgeon Fishing Trip

All spin tackle is included and the boats are set up with fishing frames. Fishing days start earlier and end later than our other trips, so pack a warm layer for both ends of the day. Camp is set up for you.

In the boat

  • Two or three swimsuits, or shorts and a top (no cotton)
  • Sports sandals or hard-soled wetsuit booties that stay on when you swim
  • A polypro, synthetic or hydro-skin shirt for chilly mornings and evenings
  • A wide-brimmed hat or ball cap
  • Polarized sunglasses with a strap. Consider bringing two pairs
  • A 1-liter water bottle with a carabiner
  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • A rain jacket
  • Your own fly rod, reel and flies, if you plan to fly fish

In camp

  • Two pairs of pants
  • Two pairs of shorts
  • Three shirts
  • A fleece jacket or sweatshirt
  • A second pair of shoes for camp, so you can get your feet dry and the sand out of your toes
  • A sleeping bag, or rent one from us along with a pack pillow
  • A small pack towel
  • Insect repellent
  • A headlamp or flashlight
  • A battery pack if you want to recharge your phone for photos
  • Personal items like medications and hygiene, kept to a minimum
  • Binoculars, because bird watchers go nuts on Idaho trips

If you have an allergy that can cause anaphylaxis, you're required to bring at least one EpiPen. Please let your guide know when you arrive. For more camp tips, see our camping trip packing list.
